The climate of the Canary Islands is known for its mild temperatures all year round. This explains why they are called “The Islands of Eternal Spring“. Gran Canaria offers pleasant temperatures almost all year round, ideal for a spring holiday, overwintering and a summer holiday.

You don’t have to be here for winter sports, except perhaps for a sporadic millimeter of snow on the highest mountain peaks. The weather is sometimes reminiscent of the Caribbean. Follow my tips and the weather closely, and you may never consider another holiday destination again.

For lovers of native flora and fauna, October is an excellent month to visit. The best months for sunbathing and walking are from March to the end of June and from September to November. In July and August temperatures can reach between 30 and 40°C. This heat is often caused by easterly currents that bring warm air to the islands.

The holiday months of July and August can sometimes be too hot, between 30 and 40°C. These sometimes hot days are due to the eastern current that brings warm air to the Canary Islands.

Want to follow the weather in Maspalomas or Gran Canaria? There is a meteo-webcam available that offers views of the beach, La Charca and inland Cumbre. As on all islands, it can be cloudy here and a north-easterly wind often blows. However, this wind can be refreshing in high temperatures, like a natural fan. The beaches and dunes on the Atlantic Ocean are definitely worth a visit.

The average temperature in the south of Gran Canaria is slightly above 22°C. If you go shopping or walking away from the coast, do this before 11 a.m. or after 4 p.m. If it is cloudy in the morning and there is a speck of rain, don’t worry, it will clear up quickly. Follow the weather forecast regularly on radio or TV, or ask at the reception of your hotel.

Is the weather in the south too extreme? Then consider an excursion to the north, such as Las Palmas, Arucas or Firgas, where it is usually a few degrees cooler and more likely to be cloudy. Ask for the weather forecast locally or listen to Dutch-language radio Holland.FM.

The weather is also changing in the Canary Islands due to global warming. In Las Palmas and the surrounding area it can sometimes rain heavily, which can lead to temporary flooding. Nowadays, rain is no longer an exception in the south of the island. From October to the end of February the weather can be changeable, with occasional thunderstorms and heavy rain.

Bad weather can last for several days, but there is no need to panic. Around Christmas and New Year the weather might as well be sunny with temperatures around 25 degrees. Although the soil is usually dry and hard, rainstorms can quickly form rivers that flow from the mountains to the sea. Dry riverbeds then turn into rushing rivers, and waterfalls appear inland. Be careful when visiting these temporary waterfalls as landslides due to excessive rain can be dangerous.

Very hot days are sometimes caused by the Calima, a hot wind from the Sahara. Protect yourself well and drink enough water to prevent dehydration. Due to the microclimate on the Canary Islands, some places may not be affected by this wind. Therefore, regularly follow the weather forecasts during your holiday.

With its diverse microclimates and beautiful landscapes, Gran Canaria offers a unique and enjoyable holiday destination all year round.
