El Tablero

El Tablero in the south of Gran Canaria

El Tablero is located in the province of San Bartolome de Tirajana in the south of Gran Canaria. This location, not far from Maspalomas, is not yet well known by the thousands of tourists who spend their holidays in Gran Canaria every year.

They say that starting small means winning big. That is what one can certainly say about El Tablero. This small municipality is growing every day by building new homes, shops, a shopping center and many other novelties. In earlier times this was an agricultural area. Tomato plantations were the largest source of income at the time.

The municipality currently has a population of approximately 6,000 inhabitants. The distance from Las Palmas to the center is 55 km. The people of El Tablero are still local residents of the island today, but this could quickly change with new apartments and houses. And I must say, this church also has a place in my heart.

The only disadvantage in my opinion is that El Tablero, as the name suggests, is located higher up. As a result, it can be a few degrees warmer here than the lower Maspalomas. Anyone who takes a walk through the municipality can still see an old warehouse. The church is also worth a visit. The large dovecote on the modern church is remarkable. The feast of Saint Trinidad is celebrated every year in the month of May.

Shopping in El Tablero

Shopping in this municipality is definitely worthwhile. There are plenty of shops and new retail premises are being added all the time. For example, there is a brand-new shopping centre. Big and well-known brands have their place here.

Not far from the church is a square with some trees. Here you can enjoy a terrace, a soft drink and tapas in peace. The locals here are very friendly and helpful.Gran Canaria without parties is almost unthinkable. El Tablero, like other locations on the island, also has its annual parties and events.

Every year in the month of May, there are major celebrations in honor of Santisima Trinidad. These celebrations last almost an entire month. This festival is accompanied by almost daily Eucharist celebrations and a pilgrimage.Throughout the month of May there are parades, music and dancing, exhibitions and many other events. For sports enthusiasts, sports activities are organized such as cycling tours, mountain bike tours and swimming competitions.

A party without drinks and food in Spain is unthinkable. So El Tablero is known every year for making a huge paella. Prepared by 32 cooks, this paella is good for 5,000 hungry stomachs and, with a diameter of 5 metres, is certainly not small. You can download the full programme every year here
